A Good Place Can Bring People Together

A Good Place Can Bring People Together

Today my friend and I happily stumbled into the grand opening of Jan's Health Bar, in Boat Canyon, in Laguna Beach. We had heard that it had just opened, and with a name like that, we knew it would be a great place to check out. But luck was on our side, and we just happened to be in the right place, at the right time. Our local radio station kx 93.5 was there, with DJ Jason Feddy and some helpers meeting and greeting the patrons. It created a festive atmosphere, but the real highlights were meeting Jan's owner, Poppy Holguin, and of course the delicious healthy foods.

Meet Poppy, the owner of Jan's Health Bar

Poppy has a great story. As a little girl, she was a local at the original Jan's in Huntington Beach. She even worked there as a teen. She was so ingrained in the fabric of the store, that 7 years ago, the first owner offered to sell it to her. She never looked back. The store in Huntington Beach has since moved, but Poppy has opened a store in Costa Mesa, and now in Laguna Beach. I think we will be better for it, too.

Here's Poppy as a young girl, on the right sitting on the chair in front of the original Jan's.

They were giving away some freebies, so besides the Jan's Original Acai Bowl, which was amazing, we also tried the kale salad, a cranberry, red berry smoothie, and a green smoothie. Jan's is not strictly vegan, so I had to ask for no feta cheese on the salad, but they were super accommodating. The dressing was really good, too! It tasted like it was made with some tahini and maybe a little soy. It was a perfect accompaniment with the kale, avocado, carrot shreds, toasted sunflower seeds and goji berries that came in the salad.

I really liked the menu, which included salad and sandwich options, soups, smoothies, all different kinds of bowls, and an awesome guacamole, served with my favorite, local Hav'a Corn Chips. Poppy's energy was infectious, you can tell immediately that she loves what she's doing. I think she really gets what it means to have a healthy place for locals, and tourists to share. She even told us that she thinks it's great to have other healthy restaurant choices nearby, that way everyone keeps striving to be better. I think she's got that right!
